Stock universes tend to show positive skew, implying that a random selection of a stock is statistically unlikely to result in picking a "winner." The larger and more diverse the universe, the more positively skewed the distribution. Investors with great expertise in an area may be able to produce outsize gains given these characteristics. Investors without the expertise should consider indexing their exposure to certain areas.
